Working and claiming benefits at the same time

I am about to get laid off from work by my employer along with a good number of others. Obviously this means that I'm going to be struggling financially, but then who isn't? Now I have managed to find a bit of temporary work but it's not enough hours only 5 to 10 hours per week so I'm going to need to claim some benefits aswel. Are unemployment benefits non taxable or will I have to pay tax on them? Also should I claim them as I'll be working a little? I heard that you could work up to 16 hours a week and still claim them but I'm not sure and I don't want to break any laws. I have paid taxes all my life, never been out of work since I left school 20 years ago so I would think I'm entitled to them. Can anyone clarify it for me? I've tried talking to the job center about it but they're about as useful as a...(place own expletives here). If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.
